A World of Color

COLOR MAKES THE WORLD GO ROUND

Colors can affect the way we feel and react to our world. Colors show up in brilliant oranges and reds in a sunset or a sunrise, flowering trees, fruits and vegetables, a box of crayons, or paints. Color resonates in the world around us and in the homes we live in, the cars we drive, the clothes we wear, and the entertainment we watch. Truly our lives revolve around COLOR.

Color therapy can be a method of physical and emotional healing. The goal of color therapy is to balance the mind and the heart and bring integration to physiological and psychological imbalances. For instance, if you’re stressed, looking at a specific color like pink or purple can help you so that you can regain psychological balance. If you are depressed, looking at the color green can be used to invigorate you and give you increased energy. Color therapy uses the power of color to heal, energize and soothe us.

EMOTIONAL RELEASE CAN HAPPEN THROUGH COLORING

Coloring can help release heavy feelings just like writing in a journal, but instead of words, we use our ability to imagine shapes and colors. Coloring out heavy feelings can be very helpful for children and adults. Coloring is a powerful tool we use to teach children about emotional health during our Children's Clinics. Coloring pages are provided in the Friendly Feelings workbook to color out anger and sadness or other heavy feelings. We remind children that when you are coloring out heavy feelings it doesn’t have to look pretty!

COLORING CHANGES BRAIN WAVES

Coloring can change the brain waves from a beta state which is a highly focused and task orientated state and can move the brain waves into an alpha state which is a state of relaxation and healing. Moving the brain to the alpha state can help us move from feeling stressed into a more relaxed meditative state which helps the body heal.

COLORING CAN HELP WITH BONDING AND ATTACHMENT

When my youngest daughter was in a communications class in High School she was given the assignment to go home and color with one of her parents. I have colored with my children when they were younger, but coloring with my daughter at 16-years-old was an experience I will never forget. As we colored we felt a closeness. We started talking and sharing and deciding on what colors to use and where we would color on the page. Coloring helped to sync up our brain waves. Coloring together bonded us and helped us feel connected.
